The Government of Pakistan has withdrawn the decision regarding the temporary reduction in speed limits on motorways and national highways, restoring the previously prescribed speed limits. According to the National Highways and Motorway Police, the speed limit for cars and light transport vehicles (LTVs) on motorways has been restored to 120 kilometres per hour, while the speed limit for public service vehicles (PSVs) and heavy transport vehicles (HTVs) has also been reinstated to 110 kilometres per hour. Similarly, the previously prescribed speed limits for cars, LTVs, PSVs, and HTVs on national highways have also been restored. Therefore, all road users to strictly observe the prescribed speed limits, follow traffic laws during travel, and ensure safe driving practices at all times.
The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has launched a comprehensive awareness campaign regarding the mandatory presence of fire extinguishers in vehicles, aimed at further improving road safety and ensuring the protection of human life and property on national highways and motorways. The NHMP has announced that after 24 June 2026, strict legal action will be taken against public service (passenger) vehicles found operating on national highways and motorways without a functional fire extinguisher. However, in view of public facilitation and to ensure wider awareness, the awareness campaign has been extended for an additional 60 days for all other vehicle categories, including cars, jeeps, SUVs, LTVs, HTVs, and others. During this period, vehicle owners and drivers will continue to be guided and educated to ensure compliance with essential safety measures. The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP), demonstrating honesty, professionalism, dedication to duty, and commitment to public service, safely returned gold jewellery and other valuable items worth approximately Rs. 2.2 million to their rightful owner. According to details, during routine patrolling near Gwadar, Motorway Police officers found a bag lying on the roadside containing valuable jewellery and other belongings. The officers immediately took the bag into protective custody and initiated efforts to trace the owner. Despite initial attempts, the owner could not be identified. Subsequently, the Motorway Police launched an awareness campaign through social media and local communication channels regarding the lost bag while keeping the details of the valuables confidential to ensure that only the genuine owner could correctly identify the belongings. During the process, the rightful owner contacted the Motorway Police and provided complete and accurate information about the bag and the valuables inside it. After fulfilling all necessary legal formalities and verification procedures, the bag along with the jewellery and other items was handed over to the owner. The owner stated that the bag had accidentally fallen onto the road during travel, and they had remained unaware of the loss. Upon receiving the valuables safely, the owner highly appreciated the honesty, professionalism, and timely response of the Motorway Police and expressed heartfelt gratitude. On this occasion, DIG West Zone Balochistan, Dr. Quresh Khan, announced cash rewards and commendation certificates for the officers involved in this commendable act. Under this initiative, it has been made mandatory for all vehicles, especially public service and cargo vehicles, to carry functional fire extinguishers. In view of the increasing risk of fire incidents during road accidents, the Motorway Police has also launched a nationwide fire safety awareness campaign, which will continue until June 24, 2026. The campaign aims to create awareness among drivers and transporters and ensure preparedness to deal with emergency situations. From June 24, 2026 onwards, public service and cargo vehicles without fire extinguishers will not be allowed to enter national highways and motorways. Strict legal action will also be taken against vehicles operating without the mandatory fire safety equipment. A tragic traffic accident occurred near Katlang on the Swat Expressway; resulting in the martyrdom of Motorway Police Sub-Inspector Nizam ud din, while Sub-Inspector Akbar Ali and a Fine Collection official sustained injuries. According to details, Sub-Inspector Nizam ud din and Sub-Inspector Akbar Ali were performing routine speed enforcement duty when a car rammed into them. The impact of the collision was severe, leaving Sub-Inspector Nizam ud din critically injured. He later embraced martyrdom during treatment. Martyr Sub-Inspector Nizam ud din belonged to Swat. He is survived by his widow and three children. His martyrdom is an irreparable loss for the Motorway Police. A minor girl travelling in the car involved in the accident also lost her life, while a husband and wife sustained injuries. Motorway Police officials responded immediately and shifted all injured persons to Mardan Medical Complex. Sub-Inspector Akbar Ali and the Fine Collection official are currently under treatment at the hospital. Initial investigations suggest that the accident occurred due to the alleged negligence and reckless driving. Further investigation into the incident is underway, while legal proceedings have also been initiated. The Inspector General, National Highways and Motorway Police, expressed profound grief and sorrow over the martyrdom of Sub-Inspector Nizam ud din and paid tribute to his sacrifice in the line of duty. He prayed for the elevation of the martyr’s ranks, patience and strength for the bereaved family, and speedy recovery of the injured officials.
The monthly Regional Conference of the National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP) was held under the chairmanship of Inspector General Sultan Ahmed Chaudhry, with DIGs and SSPs from across the country participating online. The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has imposed a ban on the entry of vehicles carrying sacrificial animals on motorways in view of Eid-ul-Adha. According to the NHMP, overloaded, unfit, and improperly loaded vehicles often lead to traffic congestion and serious road accidents. Therefore, such vehicles will be diverted to alternative routes. The NHMP further stated that, in the past, several vehicles transporting animals were involved in serious accidents, resulting in significant loss of life and property. Punjab Police and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police have also been requested to establish check posts near motorway entry points and cattle markets to ensure the effective implementation of these measures. This initiative has been taken to ensure the safety, security, and convenience of commuters traveling on motorways during the Eid season
A dignified rank-badge ceremony for recently promoted officers of the National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP) was held at the Central Police Office, Islamabad, following the decisions of the Departmental Promotion Committee. According to details, Inspector Naveed Ahmad Qazi was performing his official Hajj duties at a hotel in Saudi Arabia when he found a misplaced handbag. Upon checking, it was discovered that the bag contained 2,000 Saudi Riyals in cash along with important original identification documents. Demonstrating exceptional professionalism and sense of duty, the officer immediately contacted the hotel administration and, along with the duty officer, carefully reviewed CCTV footage to trace the rightful owner of the bag. After continuous efforts, it was confirmed that the documents belonged to a woman resident of Karachi, Pakistan. Inspector Naveed Ahmad Qazi subsequently located the concerned woman and safely returned the handbag, cash, and all original documents to her. The National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP) has introduced a cashless payment system for driving license fees to facilitate citizens and improve service delivery. Deputy Inspector General (Operations), Asghar Ali, formally inaugurated the cashless payment system. The initiative aims to eliminate the need for applicants to visit banks, providing a more convenient and efficient process. Under the new system, citizens can now easily pay their driving license fees through digital platforms such as Easypaisa, JazzCash, and various banking apps. In collaboration with the National Bank of Pakistan, QR code machines have been activated at the Islamabad Driving Licensing Authority. Similar facilities will also be made available at the Sheikhupura and Quetta Driving Licensing Authorities. The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior officials of the Motorway Police and the National Bank of Pakistan. This modern facility is expected to ensure time and cost savings, enable hassle-free payments, and provide instant real-time reconciliation notifications in coordination with the National Bank of Pakistan. The National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP) has issued a special travel advisory for transporters, passengers, and citizens travelling from across the country to attend the Tablighi Ijtema in Masjid Abu al-Qasim, Islamabad. The advisory aims to ensure smooth traffic flow and to prevent road accidents during the increased travel activity. The Tablighi Ijtema will be held from 1 May 2026 to 3 May 2026. According to the NHMP spokesperson, all passengers and drivers are strongly advised to strictly observe the following safety guidelines: All road users must fully comply with traffic laws and safe driving practices at all times. Over speeding and violation of prescribed speed limits must be strictly avoided. The use of mobile phones while driving is prohibited and full attention must be given to the road. Seat belts must be used at all times without exception. Drivers are advised not to operate vehicles in a state of fatigue or drowsiness and should take proper rest at designated service areas. Emergency vehicles must be given immediate and clear passage without delay. Before starting the journey, complete vehicle fitness must be ensured, including brakes, tyres, lights, and all essential equipment. Carrying passengers on the roof of vehicles is strictly prohibited. Heavy vehicles must travel in the left lane and strictly follow lane discipline. Frequent overtaking and reckless driving must be avoided. Overloading of vehicles is not permitted under any circumstances. Vehicles should only be parked at designated service areas, and illegal parking must be avoided.
